La Strada's video for the "The Sun Song" is the rising Brooklyn band's first official music video. Director Jack Ferry set out to create a visual equivalent of the band's dynamic old meets new sound, by shooting in locations such as Ellis Island, on cobblestone streets and by adding a worn, textured filter to the film's look. The result is an atmosphere where La Strada's old European sound is complemented by modern New York City.
Wonderful work. Keep it up. The weather played so nicely into the era and style you integrated into the work. I think you shot on my favorite street - Grace Court Alley - in BK Heights, too. - EM
I already own the camera and editing gear. And since I didn't charge myself a rental fee (how nice of me!), it didn't come out of the cost of the video. The same goes for the band's instruments. We didn't buy them for this video. The band already owned them, so we used them for free.
I agree it's definitely a great idea. I'm excited to see indie artists and MacGyver-style production brought to the limelight. But like Michael said...come on...crew, lighting, greenscreen studio, professional camera gear??? That stuff's all about favors, not frugality. Let's see what people can do without the "hookups." That's where the REAL "cool factor" will come in :)
Actually, I used my camera & computer, so no favors required. And our crew was small -- just me and Kit (Rebecca & Melissa did the Behind-the-Scenes stuff). In the edit, I didn't end up using any of the indoor (green screen) footage anyway, so our light source was the sun.

Great work, the concept for this network is really cool. Cant wait to see the rest of the videos!
Actually, it is on YouTube, as well. It's just a little slow today, due to traffic. It should be speedier tomorrow.

Hmm.. your Deb friend is so dubiously joyful over everything that you do. I think this is a great website and a great idea. The only problem is the video loads too long.. would people really switch over just for the sake of these long-to-load not so $99 video? You got a whole crew working for that music video.. lightings? for $99? Err... how about people who don't have inside connections like you Jack? Overall I like it thought.. i just can't refrain myself from putting this comment because i think u're just pushing it a bit far
People volunteered their time, which makes it free. Sure, you may not have 'industry' connections, but you must at least have a couple lamps and some friends who are willing to spend an afternoon helping you out. Some people have better connections than others, but that doesn't prevent the rest of us from being innovative and making something great.

We have another network, Indy Mogul (http://indymogul.com) that has tons of great tips for filmmakers on a budget. You really can do these kinds of videos with some talented friends and no budget!

It just looks like we had a big crew because there were so many band members! My crew was small -- just me and Kit. We work together all the time on various projects we're passionate about. Melissa and Rebecca were only there to shoot the Behind-the-Scenes stuff. The green screen and lights belong to Next New Networks, but I didn't actually end up using any of that footage, anyway. So, our lighting was provided by the sun, free of charge. Which was probably appropriate, considering it's "The Sun Song." : )
