Frequently Asked Questions
If you make a music video with expensive equipment, how can you say it was made for only $99?
There’s cost, and then there’s with value. Equipment you already own has value. Filmmakers' time (and talent) has value. But if it doesn't cost the filmmaker to use it for this video, then it doesn't count toward the $99.
What if I don’t have any filmmaking gear?
Try asking around. Chances are someone you're friends with (or related to) has a video camera you can borrow for a day. And these days, most computers come preloaded with editing software. Get creative. You might be surprised what your mom's camera and best friend's computer can do.
Do you edit on the same day as the shoot?
No. One day to shoot, one day to edit. Two days. Filmmakers can use as much time as they need for prep. Keep it simple. Plan ahead. Also, things like digitizing, rendering, and exporting don't count. Only the creative part of editing. If you're not shooting, you could potentially spend your two days animating.
Do bands pay you $99 to make music videos for them?
No. We provide our selected band and filmmaker teams with the $99 to make their music videos. The bands pay for nothing and get a music video for free. Once a $99 Music Video debuts, the bands (and/or their labels) own the them. We license the videos for distribution on our network.
I’m a band/director, how can I get on the show?
Send us your music/reel- rockout@99dollarmusicvideos.com -and we will check it out. We have a very limited number of slots available. You may want to consider pairing up with a filmmaker/band.
What if I’m not picked?
Make your video anyway! Click "Submit" to send it to us and we might just feature it on the website. Make sure you follow the Rules. There is no $99 Music Video Police, but if it seems like you cheated, we probably won't feature your video. If it helps, you can explain the details of your production in the "Description" section of the submission form.
How can I meet a band/filmmaker?
Try what we do. Go to shows and introduce yourself! You can also connect with a band directly via social networking sites (like MySpace) and classified message boards (like Craigslist), ask around your friend group. But unless we've asked to work with you, you should find a band or filmmaker yourself.
Do I need permission from the band to make a video for their song?
Yes. Otherwise, you'd be breaking Rule #4. The filmmaker and band must collaborate. If you send us something you aren't allowed to use, we won't feature it.
